Gewagte Akrobatik, phänomenales Beatboxing, meisterhaftes Scratchen und atemberaubendes Schlagwerk vereinen sich zu einem ausgereiften Abend voller Glanzleistungen. Treibende Kraft der Tom Tom Crew sind die Rhythmen des weltbekannten Perkussionisten Ben Walsh, unter u.a. Drummer bei „The Bird“. Sein Name ist geradezu ein Synonym für Schlag- und Effektinstrumente. Begleitet wird Ben Walsh von Mix-Meister DJ Dub‘s und dem Beatboxing-Zauberkünstler Tom Thum, der schon mit 18 Jahren World-Duo-Champion beim „World Beat Boxing Championship 2005“ wurde. Ben Lewis, Daniel Catlow, Shane Witt, Dave Carberry, Absolventen von Australiens berühmten „Flying Fruit Fly Circus“ und Nachwuchstalent Jamie MacDowell fliegen durch die Luft und zeigen eine schwindelerregende Performance mit atemberaubenden Saltos.

Ben Walsh ist nicht nur berühmter Musiker, der mit „The Bird“ in den vergangenen 10 Jahren Erfolge feierte, Walsh interessiert sich vor allem für Grenzüberschreitungen in der Musik. Unter anderem mit seinem Omnichord aus dem Jahr 1981, einer in Japan hergestellten elektronischen Harfe, erschafft er für die Artisten ein ganz ungewöhn-liches Klangspektrum. Walsh ist das Zentrum der Tom Tom Crew, seine Beats tragen die Produktion, seine pulsierenden Rhythmen treiben die Show voran. Der Ausnahme-Musiker hat sich intensiv mit Perkussions-Traditionen quer durch alle Kulturen beschäftigt, und baute für die Tom Tom Crew Drumkits u.a. aus Ölfässern, asiatischem Elektronikspielzeug und über 2.000 Kabelbindern.

Scratching-Meister DJ Dub‘s – alias Luke Dubber – gehört zu den vielseitigen DJs Australiens, technisch perfekt und ungeheuer talentiert. Er hat schon mit den besten HipHop- und Dance-Music-Künstlern der Welt gearbeitet. Der 22-jährige Beatbox Duo World Champion Tom Thum profiliert sich schon über acht Jahre in den obersten Rängen der Beatbox-Battles.

Fünf talentierte Artisten stehen dem Musikwirbel auf der Bühne in nichts nach – die Mehrzahl kommt aus dem bekannten australischen Flying Fruit Fly Circus, der renommiertesten Zirkusschule des Landes. Ben Lewis ist ein Meister in vielen artistischen Disziplinen und tourt seit fünf Jahren weltweit. Shane Witt und Daniel Catlow sind ein eingespieltes Team am Teeterboard, der Wippe. Kontorsionist Dave Carberry gehört zu den Artisten des australischen Zirkus Circa, der Zirkus und Tanz verbindet. Seit 2009 ist der Bodenakrobat Jamie MacDowell Teil der Tom Tom Crew.
Die Tom Tom Crew feiert seit ihrem Debüt 2006 Erfolge rund um den Globus. Ausverkaufte Gastspiele, sowohl beim Edinburgh Fringe Festival als auch im New Victory Theatre New York, und eine neunwöchige Europatournee gehen dem Gastspiel im Berliner TIPI am Kanzleramt voraus. Anschließend ist die Gruppe vom 10. Juni bis 4. Juli in den „Fliegenden Bauten“ in Hamburg zu sehen. Willkommen im Zirkus des 21. Jahrhunderts!

Biografisches

BEN WALSH is the brain-child behind electronic hit The Bird and has trained extensively in the ancient drumming arts of many international cultures, including Indian Tabla and Japanese Taiko – which is described as Kung Fu with drums. He performed with Japanese drumming outfit TaikOz and was a founding member of the Australian/Indian fusion group DHA, as well as the highly acclaimed Circle of Rhythm. Ben and Strut & Fret have toured his solo works First Sound and Circuit Breaker throughout Australia and internationally to the Hong Kong Kong Arts Festival, Taipei Dance Forum and Esplanade Theatres, Singapore. Recent projects include a commission to score Fantastic Planet, an original animated film, and a new work called Orkestra of the Underground for the 2009 Sydney Festival.

DJ DUB’S took up musical instruments at a young age. He graduated from the Australian Institute of Music with an Associate Diploma in contemporary Keyboard. He is a full-time musician working the keyboard craft in many acts including Hermitude, Vassy, Gauche and a number of other acts. As player of multi-instruments, Dubs combines sampling and mixing with turntablism and keys with wonderful precision and style. (www.elefanttraks.com)

TOM THUM is one of Australia’s most prolific beat-boxers, having been awarded Australia’s best beatboxer four years in a row in the OzHipHop awards and winning the team battle Beatboxing World Championships in 2005 alongside Joel Turner. In 2006 Tom received second place at the Scribble Jam beatbox battles, America’s most prestigious hip-hop competition. Tom is constantly touring and performing at many national and international festivals and gigs, but also remains a solid member of the local Brisbane Hip Hop scene as a breakdancer, graffiti writer, emcee and producer. He also has a collection of fierce animals.

DAVE CARBERRY joined the Flying Fruit Fly Circus at age 11 and graduated in 2001. He trained in circus extensively with Australian, Russian and Chinese master trainers and has performed both nationally and internationally. In 2005, he joined Brisbane contemporary circus Circa, and has been a key member of the ensemble since, working as both a physical performer and musical director. The company has performed in major venues and at festivals across Europe, Asia, North and South America as well as touring nationally. Dave has also undertaken other projects independent of Circa including a season with the Tom Tom Crew at the Sydney Opera House.

DANIEL CATLOW is a graduate of the Flying Fruit Fly Circus, having spent 10 years specializing in acrobatics, teeterboard and tight wire. He has performed throughout Australia and internationally, including Canada, Hawaii, New Zealand, Holland, the UK and New York on Broadway. Daniel has been involved with various different companies including Strut & Fret, Circa and Flipside Circus (Trainer). He performed a month long season of ‘How Many Sleeps’ in Brisbane during 2008, and during the 2009 Streets of Melbourne (Melbourne’s inaugural street theatre festival). He also appeared in ‘A Barrel of Monkeys’, for the Perth Winter Arts Festival and Federation Square’s holiday program. Daniel recently starred in commercials for FUJI Xerox which aired in Japan, performing teeterboard with Shane Witt.

BEN LEWIS began his career in the circus at the tender age of seven when he walked through the doors of the Flying Fruit Fly Circus, based in his home town of Albury. Ben took to hard training and practice with great enthusiasm and went on to complete ten years with the company, performing all over Australia and around the world. After graduating, Ben was accepted into the National Institute of Circus Arts where he completed a three year Bachelor degree. Ben is a master of the aerial straps; hanging from the rafters he twists and manipulates, then drops stopping inches from the ground. Ben has been member of Circus Oz and has toured internationally for the past 5 years.

JAMIE MACDOWELL has always found his balance in expression. Before joining the Tom Tom Crew in London, during their 2009 international tour, Jamie was a member of Melbourne based companies, ‘Team Loko’ and ‘Trace Elements’, performing within their unique branches of physicality that adopt techniques from ground based acrobatics and parkour. Jamie began training acrobatics in 2002 and has since continued to develop his understanding of expressive movement. More recently, Jamie has found passion in music, which allows him to continue creating through the recovery periods that acrobatics demands.

SHANE WITT is a graduate of the Flying Fruit Fly Circus, where he continues to work as head coach and teacher. Shane has performed throughout Australia and internationally, including return seasons to Broadway, New York, Canada, Hawaii with Flying Fruit Fly Circus productions. Shane is a highly accomplished acrobat and tumbler, specialising in Teeterboard. Together with Daniel Catlow, they are Australia’s leading artists of this apparatus having performed for numerous awards nights, corporate functions, events and festivals around the globe. He also appeared in Barrel of Monkeys, for the Perth Winter Arts Festival and Federation Square’s holiday program and has appeared in commercials for FUJI Japan performing with Daniel on the teeterboard. Shane has also performed in the 2006 Commonwealth Games and 2000 Olympic opening ceremonies.

Hailing from Strong Island, NY DJ Chaps is a Battle, Club, Tour, and Concert DJ, as well as Musical Director and Producer. DJ Chaps has worked closely in concert with artists such as Talib Kweli, Jean Grae, Strong Arm Steady, Planet Asia, Black Thought of The Roots, Pete Rock, Common , Kanye West , KRS One, Dead Prez and more.
Battle and Party DJ, Chaps has mastered his own style, with his unique style of beat juggling, smooth crisp scratches and unique blends. Chaps’ talents have pushed him towards the forefront of live show performances and NYC’s nightclub scene. Currently, Chaps is on tour with Blacksmith Recording Artist Talib Kweli since 2001; performing domestically and worldwide. Chaps has successfully made “The Art of the DJ” a science.
In 1996 he Co-Founded the 12 Inch Assassins. 12 Inch Assassins was created to provide the hip-hop community with the most talented DJs. VERTUAL VERTIGO of longtime friends EZEKIEL38 and CEREBRAL VORTEX. The two met in Nürnberg (Germany) in the year 2000. After comparing each others musical traits, likes and dislikes in a few lengthy cyphers the two became instant allies and formed VERTUAL VERTIGO.

The two have been recording and performing together since then and have toured through multiple countries and almost all of the 50 US states. Where others tend to rap about jewels, cars and violence, VERTUAL VERTIGO’s lyrics are true stories about love, life, travel and the quest for better living. With witty punch-lines and a distinct delivery, as well as a full throttle energy, VERTUAL VERTIGO’s stage presence not only keeps people dancing, but keeps people listening.

Along with combined achievements, the members of the crew have also gone above and beyond as solo artists.

Cerebral Vortex is internationally acclaimed for his early pioneering in the Euro Electro/Hip Hop Scene. He has gone on to release several different projects in both Germany and the U.K in 2008 and 2009.

Ezekiel38 is a Two Time Iraq veteran, and now anti war activist, who has played events such as THE DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION 2008 in Denver, where his 12″ single (Riddim of the Marching) was picked up by I.V.A.W (iraq vets against the war) as their official campaign song along side Barrack Obama!
