Aspen Program Fall/Winter 2010

Berlin, 08/31/2010

Dear Friend of the Aspen Institute Germany

I am writing to inform you about upcoming Aspen Germany events this Winter / Fall.

On the evening of Tuesday September 14th, 2010 at 1830hrs, Admiral S. Robert Foley, Jr., USN, Retired, former Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet and former Vice President of the University of California responsible for the management of the three national laboratories that UC administers on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy and its National Nuclear Security Administration (bio attached) will speak at an Aspen Germany public event at the China Club on the “Strategic Implications of the Rise of China”. Given Admiral Foley’s considerable experience of the Pacific theater, and nuclear matters, I am sure his views on one of the most salient strategic developments of the last few years for both Europe and the United States, will be both informative and thought-provoking. Please invite colleagues, friends and acquaintances to participate, if you feel so inclined.

From September 15-18 2010, Aspen Germany will convene a conference for young leaders from the Western Balkans at Schwanenwerder. We plan a final barbecue on Friday the 17th of September 2010 at Schwanenwerder from 2000hrs onwards. Members of the Friends of the Aspen Institute are invited to attend. The barbecue offers an opportunity to enjoy Schwanenwerder in the Fall, meet emerging European and U.S. young leaders, get to know an ongoing Aspen Germany program better and perhaps make some useful contacts for the future. A confidential draft agenda and list of participants are attached for your background information. The conference is by invitation only.

On September 22-24, Joachim Krause, Horst Teltschik, Günther Nonnenmacher and Karsten Voigt will convene the 2010 Aspen European Strategy Forum (the third so far in this very successful series). This year’s topic is “The Strategic Implications of the Iranian Nuclear Program”. As you can see from the attached confidential draft agenda and list of participants, this promises to be a very interesting event with high-level participation. Members of the Friends of the Aspen Institute are invited to attend the opening cocktail reception at the Adlon Hotel on the evening of the Wednesday, September 22nd at 1800hrs. The conference has been in preparation for over a year and participation is by invitation only.

On the evening of Monday October 11th, 2010 at 1900hrs professor Bruce Hoffmann of Georgetown University will be speaking at an Aspen Germany public event at the China Club on the Topic of 10 Years After 9/11: Lessons Learned? Prof. Hoffmann is one of the two leading international authorities on terrorism (bio attached). Given ongoing events in Afghanistan, Yemen, Somalia, Iraq and Lebanon (to name but a few) I believe that his presentation will be of particular interest. Please feel free to invite colleagues, friends and acquaintances to come and sample Aspen Germany’s public program of events.

On the evening of Thursday, October 28th, 2010 at 1930hrs Reigning Prince Hans-Adam II of Liechtenstein (bio) will present his new book “The State in the Third Millennium” at a small, seated dinner organized by Aspen Germany and the Embassy of Liechtenstein at the China Club. As the number of seats is limited, I would appreciate it if you contact Aspen Germany by the end of this month if you wish to be included on the list of potential invitees to be agreed with Embassy of Liechtenstein, which is kindly underwriting this event.

From Friday December 10th, 2010 through Sunday, December 12th 2010, Aspen Germany will host seven foreign ministers from Southeast Europe for a closed-door conference at Schwanenwerder on a “foreign minister plus zero” basis. This is the third year that Aspen Germany has hosted this event. This year it is being organized in cooperation with the Berlin embassy of the Republic of Austria and funded in part by the German Federal Foreign Office. We currently expect top level participation from the German and Austrian foreign ministries in addition to the seven foreign ministers from Southeast Europe. On Friday, December 10th, 2010 at 1430hrs a public opening event will take place at the Austrian embassy in Berlin. Members of the Friends of the Aspen Institute together with leaders from Germany, Austrian and Southeastern European industry are invited to hear the opening speeches that we expect to be given by top level representatives of the German and Austrian foreign ministries and to participate in an ensuing roundtable and reception.

If you use an iPhone, Google Calendar or any other CalDAV compatible scheduling software, you can have the dates given above automatically imported into your calendar and automatically updated (should they change) by clicking here. If you would like to attend any of the events listed as open to the public and/or the Friends of the Aspen Institute above, kindly contact Ms. Arzu Celep either by clicking on the link to the left in order to reply by electronic mail or by contacting her by telephone at +49 30 80 48 90 15.

It would be a pleasure to welcome at The Aspen Institute this Fall/Winter.

Best regards,

Charles King Mallory, IV
Executive Director
